Salik timing Dubai 2026 – Business Bay Crossing toll gate on Al Khail Road
Share

By the CalibRide chauffeur team. We’ve been driving Dubai’s roads since 2012. Last checked against Salik and RTA announcements:

Quick answer: On weekdays (Monday to Saturday), Salik costs AED 6.30 per gate from 6am to 10am and from 4pm to 8pm. It drops to AED 4.20 the rest of the day, and it’s completely free from 1am to 6am, every day. Sundays are AED 4.20 all day, except the same free 1am–6am window. Those prices include the 5% VAT that started on 1 June 2026.

That’s the short version. Our drivers cross these gates dozens of times a day, though, and the rate table is only half the story. What actually matters is how many gates your route hits, and whether you can shift your trip by 30 minutes. Below you’ll find what real routes cost, when we leave to save money, and the rules most people get wrong.

Salik Timings and Rates 2026 (with VAT)

According to Salik’s official website, it has used time-based pricing since 31 January 2025. It replaced the old flat AED 4 toll that every Dubai driver knew by heart.

TimeDaysPer GateYou PayPeriod

Charged per gate passed. Rates may differ on public holidays and during major events.

The extra 30 fils per crossing looks small. But a commuter passing four gates a day at peak now pays about AED 25 daily, and there’s no daily or monthly cap on Salik. It adds up fast.

How Much Salik Will Your Trip Cost?

This is the question we get from guests every week, so here are the routes we drive most. Gate counts are for the usual fastest route. Your navigation app may pick something different depending on traffic.

One-way estimates, including 5% VAT. Your exact gates depend on the route your chauffeur takes and traffic on the day.

Notice the airport-to-Marina run. At 8:30am it costs three times what the Downtown run does, before you’ve even hit traffic. For guests landing at peak, our chauffeurs often take Al Khail Road or Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road (E311) instead. It’s a few kilometres longer, but it skips most of the gates and the Sheikh Zayed Road jam.

Flying in? Our Dubai airport transfer drivers track your flight and choose the route on the day, so you never think about gates. Planning a sightseeing day instead? A private Dubai city tour crosses Sheikh Zayed Road several times, and that’s exactly where Salik quietly stacks up.

The Best Time to Leave: What Our Drivers Actually Do

Salik timing and Dubai traffic follow almost the same curve. Shift your trip a little, and you save on both. These are the habits our chauffeurs swear by.

  • Leave at 10:05am, not 9:45am. You pay off-peak at every gate, and the school and office rush has mostly cleared Sheikh Zayed Road by then.
  • Wrap up afternoon meetings before 3:30pm. By 4pm the peak rate kicks in, and the Al Maktoum and Garhoud bridges back up toward Deira.
  • Dinner in the Marina? Head out after 8pm. You’ll pay off-peak, and the road is calmer than the 6pm crawl.
  • Early flight? You may pay nothing. A 5am departure from Downtown or the Marina to DXB passes the gates inside the free 1am–6am window.
  • Sunday is the cheapest full day. It’s AED 4.20 at any hour. If you have a flexible errand that crosses the city, Sunday is the day.

One honest note. Saving AED 2 a gate isn’t worth sitting in traffic for 40 minutes. When guests have a meeting at 9am, we take the fastest road and pay the peak toll. Time is usually worth more than the toll.

Salik Free Timing and the One-Hour Rule

Salik is free at every gate from 1:00am to 6:00am, seven days a week. That’s the only fully free window. There’s no free day, and public holidays aren’t free either.

The second way to save is the one-hour rule. It only covers specific gate pairs, and only in the same direction:

  • Al Mamzar North and Al Mamzar South: pass both within one hour, and you’re charged once.
  • Al Safa North and Al Safa South: same rule, one charge within the hour.
  • Al Mamzar and Al Safa together: pass one, then the other within an hour in the same direction, and you’re still charged once.

That last one surprises a lot of people. A drive from Sharjah to Al Quoz along Al Ittihad Road and Sheikh Zayed Road can pass Al Mamzar and both Al Safa gates. Inside the hour, those count as a single charge. You’ll still pay separately for any bridge gate on the way, like Al Garhoud. A U-turn resets everything, since the rule only applies in the same direction.

Salik on Sundays, Public Holidays and Ramadan

Sundays: AED 4.20 at every hour except 1am–6am, which stays free. There’s no peak rate on Sunday.

Public holidays: Not free. Salik confirmed this during Eid Al Adha, when the normal weekday schedule ran across the whole holiday, peak rates included. Always check Salik’s announcement before a long weekend, because they publish holiday schedules a few days ahead.

Ramadan: The schedule changes completely, because work hours shift. In Ramadan 2026, the peak band moved to roughly 9am–5pm on weekdays, and the free window shifted to 2am–7am to fit suhoor and late-night traffic. Ramadan 2027 is expected to begin around early February. We’ll update this guide as soon as Salik announces the new timings.

Tip from our drivers: during Ramadan, the real traffic peak is the hour before iftar. Salik may be off-peak by then, but the roads aren’t. Give yourself extra time.

All 10 Salik Gates in Dubai

Dubai has 10 Salik gates. The newest two, Business Bay Crossing and Al Safa South, opened in November 2024.

For traffic between Dubai and Sharjah, our car with driver in Sharjah service uses Al Ittihad Road or the E311 depending on time of day.

Driving to Abu Dhabi: Salik Isn’t the Only Toll

People search for “Abu Dhabi Salik time”, but Salik stops at the Dubai border. Abu Dhabi runs its own system, called Darb, and it changed a lot in 2026.

  • Bridge gates into Abu Dhabi island: AED 4 per crossing, only at peak (7am–9am and 3pm–7pm, Monday to Saturday). Free on Sundays and off-peak.
  • Ghantoot gate (E11, near the Dubai border) and Al Qurm gate: opened on 4 May 2026, and they charge around the clock, not just at peak.
  • No daily cap anymore. Abu Dhabi scrapped the old AED 16 daily cap in September 2025.
  • Dubai plates must register on Darb. You get a short grace period, then fines start at AED 100.

So a peak-hour trip from Downtown Dubai to the Corniche can hit Salik on Sheikh Zayed Road, then Ghantoot, then a Darb bridge gate. That’s three different toll charges on one drive, on two different accounts.

That’s one reason guests book a car with driver in Abu Dhabi for the day. Our chauffeurs already have both accounts set up. If it’s your first visit to the capital, our Abu Dhabi city tour from Dubai takes care of the whole round trip.

Renting a Car in Dubai? Read This Before You Pay Salik

We’ve worked in Dubai car rental since 2012, so here’s what the rental desk won’t always explain. Your rental car has its own Salik tag. Every crossing gets billed back to you after the trip, and most companies add an admin fee per crossing on top of the toll. On a busy week of sightseeing, the Salik line on your final invoice can surprise you.

Ask the rental company three questions before you sign:

  1. What’s the admin fee per Salik crossing?
  2. Is Darb set up if I drive to Abu Dhabi?
  3. When will Salik and fines be charged to my card?

Self-Drive vs Chauffeur: The Real Cost

CostSelf-drive rentalWith a chauffeur
Salik tolls×Billed later, plus admin fees✓Included in the fare
Darb (Abu Dhabi)×Your job to register✓Handled by the driver
Fuel×Extra✓Included
Parkingnow with 5% VAT×Extra✓Driver drops you at the door
Fines risk×Yours✓None for you
Your time×Driving, navigating, parking✓Free to work or rest

For a short solo trip, renting is usually cheaper. For a family, a business visit or a full day of sightseeing, the gap closes quickly once you add every line. That’s where a chauffeur service in Dubai makes sense: one price, quoted upfront, and you never look at a toll gate. If you’d rather have the car for longer, see our rent a car with driver in Dubai option.

4 Salik Myths We Hear From Guests

“Salik is free on Sundays.” Not anymore. Sunday is AED 4.20 all day. Only 1am–6am is free, the same as every other day.

“Toll gates are free on public holidays.” They aren’t. The normal variable rates apply unless Salik announces otherwise.

“Passing both Al Safa gates means paying twice.” Not if you’re going in the same direction within an hour. You’re charged once.

“Salik is still AED 4.” That flat rate ended in January 2025. Today you’ll pay AED 4.20 or AED 6.30, depending on the time.
